Raising Dion is Netflix’s highly rated series, first aired in 2019. The 10-episode series is based on a short film and comic book of the same name. Unlike other superhero sci-fi stories, Raising Dion is unique in its storytelling perspective. Our hero is widowed mother Nicole as she goes through the trials and tribulations of raising a 7-year-old son that can turn invisible, manipulate plasma, and move objects with his mind.
In 2015, before Netflix greenlit Raising Dion, longtime friend, writer, and director Dennis Liu came to GRAFX CO. with a nearly complete short film stylized as a trailer that he had produced as a pitch. There was just something missing from the short that would elevate its fantastical plot...
GRAFX CO stepped up and to generate explosions, energy blasts, melting plasma, Invisibility, and glowing orbs of lights. The kind of VFX needed to push the concept over the edge into the believable territory.
After its release, the trailer went viral. Both the trailer and comic were commended for its multicultural and interracial perspectives. Dennis Liu’s intentions when creating Raising Dion were to diversify the film industry, and he succeeded. GRAFX CO. is proud to have been able to be a part of this movement.
After all the hard work Dennis put in, the concept and viral response paid back. Netflix decided to partner with Dennis and bring Dion under its originals umbrella. "The first season of Raising Dion debuted on Netflix in October and follows the story of Nicole (Alisha Wainwright), who raises her son Dion (Ja'Siah Young) after the death of her husband, Mark (Michael B. Jordan). The normal dramas of raising a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion starts to manifest several mysterious, superhero-like abilities. Nicole must now keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat (Jason Ritter), and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities."
After being named one of Netflix’s 10 most popular series of 2019, the superhero drama Raising Dion is coming back for a second season.
We are proud to be a part of Director Dennis Liu's success and seeing our initial VFX scenes translated to the big screen with Netflix.
